From 18 to 19 March, Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Inga Bērziņa will participate in the 10th European Summit of Regions and Cities in Mons (Belgium). The Summit will discuss the current challenges facing local and regional authorities, such as climate change, global pandemics and Russia's war in Ukraine.
Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Inga Berzina will address the Summit session "Resilience. Preparing regions and cities for crises", highlighting challenges, good practices and future needs of Latvian municipalities and regions. The visit will also include a meeting with Vasco Alves Cordeiro, President of the European Committee of the Regions, and Elio Di Rupo, Prime Minister of Wallonia.
The 10th European Summit of Regions and Cities will provide a fresh perspective on current issues of concern to politicians and citizens alike: sustainable development, the need for social, economic and territorial cohesion, the future of local government and the European Union, including enlargement and overcoming the challenges of the war in Ukraine. Solutions to global challenges and building resilience will be sought by bringing together perspectives and experiences from around the world and involving representatives from all levels of government.
The Summit will adopt the Mons Declaration, expressing the commitment to a stronger, fairer and more resilient Europe with its regions and municipalities.
This year's European Summit of Regions and Cities coincides with the 30th anniversary of the European Committee of the Regions.
