Riga, 18 March 2021 - Today, the Cabinet has approved the allocation of EUR 55 million from the State budget programme for accidents, directed by the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. Consequently, in general, 91,9 million euro will be invested in road development in the context of the Administrative Territorial Reform (ATR) this year.
Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Artūrs Toms Plešs (AP!): “Renewing and rebuilding roads makes a significant contribution to reducing regional inequalities and promoting the development of areas, making regions more competitive, more affordable to investment and more comfortable for locals. Investment in road infrastructure will help ensure better reach for municipal administrative centres, facilitate access to services and jobs provided by state and local authorities. . These are fundamental objectives of the administratively territorial reform."
In general, in the context of ATR, the National Development Plan for 2021-2027 provides for around 900 km of national regional and local roads, investing 300 million in their development. €102 million is planned in the European Commission's Recovery and Stability Mechanism Plan.
In addition to the work provided for in the National Development Plan, several regional and local roads have undergone repairs in the past year, with the restoration of 144 km of motorways by the State of Latvia, which have been identified by planning regions in cooperation with local governments as essential for the territorial reach following the reform.
